The studio at Blue Flag is a relaxed space offering a variety of classes and events. Whether you are a brand-new weaver, a one more experienced or someone interested in other textile techniques, there’s a class for you! Be inspired, have fun, and gain the confidence you need to tackle any project.

FREE Informal Handspinning
Every other Thursday – 2:00 until 5:00 PM

July 27, Aug. 10, Aug. 24 . . . Get help improving your spinning skills or just come to spin and socialize. Every other Thursday from 2:00 until 5:00 PM, both experienced and new spinners are invited to take part in FREE open spinning. No need to sign up in advance – Just bring your wheel or spindle and join us!

 


Make Exceptional Spinning Batts
Friday, August 18 – 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM

Using a drum carder, create batts that spin up easily and let you combine the perfect color and fiber for your desired yarn. Whether you wish to make traditional batts or get fun and funky with “art” batts, you will leave this class with a greater understanding of how to prepare fiber for what you want to do with it!
Participants will be provided an array of wool, alpaca, silk, Firestar® nylon to add “flash” and other fibers and embellishments. Each participant will make at least two large batts.

Dyeing With Indigo
Saturday, August 26 – 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM

In this workshop, students learn the basics of creating an organic indigo dye vat, and how to dye wools, silk and cellulose fibers. Overdying with other natural dyes to create a variety of colors will also be included. Sample skeins will be provided, but students are free to bring a small amount of their own yarn or light colored natural fabrics to experiment with.

Monk’s Belt and Kindred Weaves
Friday, September 8 – 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM

Monk’s belt is an ancient, two-shuttle weave structure with two blocks on four shafts, drafted on opposites. The blocks don’t overlap and clear, clean areas of color and graphic designs are created. It is often identified with Swedish weaving. In this round-robin style class students will explore many variations of Monk’s Belt including turned Monk’s Belt. Students will be provided pre-wound warps and warping instructions in order to bring ready-to-weave looms to class.

Very Beginning Handweaving Class
Sat. Sept. 16 & Sun. Sept. 17 – 9:00 AM until 6:00 PM both days

In this class, designed for brand new weavers, you will weave your first project start to finish while learning how to use a four-harness loom. We’ll explore the many patterns possible with the simplest twill threading. The completion of a wool scarf provides a wonderful sense of accomplishment.

Inlay Using the Theo Moorman Technique
Friday, September 29, – 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM

Inlay using Theo Moorman’s technique

Theo Moorman’s inlay technique allows you to create an isolated, tapestry-like image of any shape or size anywhere on the surface of handwoven fabric providing great design freedom. Learn placement of design elements, weaving with a cartoon, incorporating threading variations and creating transparencies with designs that seem to float in space. Students will be provided warping instructions in order to bring pre-warped looms to class.
$105.00 includes some supplies.

Introduction to Lace Weaves
Friday & Saturday, October 6 & 7, 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM both days

This course provides an introduction to loom controlled-lace weaves. Looms will be threaded for different laces and students will weave samples in a round robin format, gaining firm understanding of lace structures and exploring the use of positive and negative space as design elements. This class is for advanced beginner or intermediate level weavers. Students will be provided warping materials and instructions in order to bring pre-warped looms to class.
$135.00 includes all materials.

Introduction to Rug Weaving
Saturday & Sunday, October 14 & 15, 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM both days

During this class you will about rug weaving, suitable materials and how rugs differ from weaving other fabric. Looms will be threaded for different structures suitable for rug weaving and students will weave samples in a round robin format. This class is a perfect next step for those who have completed a beginning class or anyone who has not woven rugs. Students will be provided a warp and warping instructions in order to bring pre-warped looms to class.
$135.00 includes warp materials and some weft.

Creative Plying For Handspinners
Friday, November 3 – 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM

Learn how to make interesting 2 and 3 ply yarn by plying from bobbins on a lazy kate, plying from two ends of a center pull ball, “Navajo” plying from a single end and creatively plying handspun with commercial yarns to create innovative texture.
$80 includes commercial yarn for plying.

Arrange a Weaving Class To Fit Your Schedule

One-on-one Beginning Four-Shaft Weaving

Approximately 10 hours of individualized instruction designed for brand new weavers, plus 10 additional hours of use of the Blue Flag studio and equipment. This class covers the same topics as the Very Beginning Weaving class but at your own pace and on a schedule that meets your needs.

Private Weaving Instruction: All Levels

Private weaving instruction is available to help you work out a problem or start from the beginning! Please keep in mind that weaving can not be learned in an hour or even in a day; you need to have some time to devote in order to master the technicalities of the craft. You will receive a lot of personal attention in classes at Blue Flag because class sizes are very small. However, if you want help with a specific topic, or can’t find a class on the schedule that suits your needs and interests, private instruction may be for you!
